Context: Malcolm X was a legendary activist, speaker, and leader in the Black Nationalist movement of the 1960s. Despite being assassinated in 1964 as part of a string of assassinations (those of Dr. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, and President John F. Kennedy) meant to dismantle the Civil Rights movement, the legacy of Malcolm X lives on in the Black community. His autobiography was told to and transcribed by Alex Haley shortly before his murder and continues to be a seminal text in Black liberation movements and Black activist thought.
In his autobiography, Malcolm X describes during his early years in New York that he participated in many forms of hustling–including a form of sex work where he would travel to the homes of wealthy white men to be paid for the sexual service of sprinkling talcum powder over their naked bodies.
